Coffee with Mr. Carter and November Recap

I would like to invite you to my monthly “Coffee with Mr. Carter” on Monday, December 10th from 6:45-7:30am at Clark Hall room 225. If you have any questions about anything school related, you are encouraged to attend. One topic of discussion will be the scheduling process since students will begin scheduling for classes after the holiday break. If you have questions or just want to learn more about the process, please join us. The PTO provides the coffee!
There was much to be thankful for at GLHS in November:
Theatre teacher, Cindi Macioce, and her students did an excellent job on the play, The Father of the Bride. There were so many students involved in this production, from the stage crew to the entire cast, and I continue to be amazed by their talent. Thanks to everyone who attended and supported our students in the performing arts!
The GLHS Marching Band had an awesome experience as they marched in the Thanksgiving Day Parade in Philadelphia. Thanks to all the parent chaperones, participating staff members, and, most importantly, the members of the band, for performing at a high level! On Monday, November 26th our teachers were engaged in several professional learning opportunities that included learning more about the Common Core State Standards. Following are brief descriptions of what took place for each department:
·     Our Science and Social Studies teachers focused on integrating literacy into their curriculum as part of the Common Core State Standards. The Common Core places an emphasis on more primary sources and informational non-fiction text, so each of our subject areas are expected to incorporate these strategies. This has been an area of focus for us since last school year.
·     I met with the Intervention Specialists during the morning to discuss the collaborative classroom, review student performance data, and to share ways we can better serve students to increase their performance.
·    Our Math teachers examined their curricular alignment to ensure they are meeting the Common Core State Standards. The emphasis was on how to scaffold, or build up to Calculus problems from Algebra I up to Calculus.
·    Our Business Department, which includes several content areas, worked on their building goals, including preparing some dual credit opportunities for our students.  Dual Credit means students, upon successful completion of the class, will earn high school credit and college credit. The college credit would be guaranteed to transfer to any state university in Ohio.
·     Our Art teachers worked on the their community outreach goal with the Gahanna City Parks and Recreation Department, prepared for the upcoming Arts Night, and worked on a new studio that, with the help of the Gahanna Jefferson Education Foundation, will allow us to provide another unique opportunity for our students.
·     Our English teachers worked on their department goals, which included the development of common assessments and transitioning their curriculum to include the new Common Core State Standards.
·     Our Cognitive and Multiple Disabilities teachers worked with Special Education Director, Sue Wieging, on the new Alternative Assessment Standards.
·     Our Guidance Counselors visited the Pomegranate Health System, which is an adolescent psychiatric facility, in order to learn more about how to serve our students who are struggling with social/emotional difficulties. They then returned in the afternoon to prepare for the student scheduling process.
·     Music teachers learned more about the performance standards and the Common Core State Standards.
·    International Language teachers worked with Mr. Hank Langhals from Central Office, to incorporate the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language Standards.
·     Health/Physical Education teachers focused on a couple of things. They continued to work on the development of a blended learning course, which is a model that combines classroom time and online learning. They are two of five areas that will have blended learning classes next school year. PE teachers also worked on establishing a system to record the data they collect about how well students are meeting the new Physical Education standards.
·    In the afternoon, we reviewed the principles of Professional Learning Communities to make sure we, as a school, are focused on four key questions:
o   What are students supposed to know and be able to do?
o   How do we know they’ve learned it?
o   What do we do when they don’t know it?
o   What do we do when they already know it?
We continue to work hard to not only create and sustain positive relationships with our students, but to also hone our craft as educators. Until next time...
